... This is Berk. It's twelve days north of Hopeless, and a few degrees south of Freezing to Death. It's located solidly on the Meridian of Misery, in the most remote part of the North Sea...
On the island a village of Vikings's been here for seven generations but its population is constantly attacked by dragons, who steal their livestock and burn the houses.
Hiccup, a boy of fifteen year old, son of the village chief, Stoick the Vast, would like to become, like all the Vikings, a skilled dragon slayer, to obtain the consent of the village and particularly his father's esteem.
One night, during an other dragons attack, Hiccup manages to hit a Night Fury, an extremely rare and dangerous dragon. The following day, Hiccup finds the dragon in the forest and he decides not to kill him but to free him.
Meanwhile, Stoick assembles a fleet to search the dragons' nest, leaving Hiccup in a dragon-fighting class taught by Gobber, the blacksmith of country. Hiccup returns to the forest and he finds the Night Fury still there. In fact the dragon is not able to fly because of its crippled caudal fin.
Hiccup slowly befriends the dragon and gives it the name "Toothless", for its retractable teeth. Hiccup decides to build a harnessand and prosthetic fin to allows him to guide the dragon in free flight.
Between Hiccup and Toothless it creates a strong friendship that will change the opinion that everyone has about dragons. A dangerous threat, however, is coming down on the Vikings, the Red Death. Will Hiccup and Toothless to kill the Red Death and rescue vikings?
